The thing is to be attentively present.
To sit and wait is as important as to move.
Patience is as valuable as industry.
What is to be known is always there.
When it reveals itself to you, or when you come upon it, it is by chance.
The only condition is your being there and being watchful.

Wendell Berry
The Long-Legged House *

Let me start by saying that I’m a beginning birder. I know, I know. Every birder I chat with says, “I’ve been at this for 40 years, and I’m a beginner!” Really, though, I’m a beginner. I began documenting the birds I see each day on March 28, 2013 and began photographing birds in June. I expected to learn about birds. I didn’t realize just how much the birds would teach me. Now it’s time to chronicle this journey. Come. Join me. I’d love some company on my adventure.

I believe I need to update this page. It’s now the beginning of December, 2013. I’ve been on this journey for eight months. I am so totally hooked it’s ridiculous. Every Saturday and Sunday, I get up even EARLIER than on work days in order to trek to a wildlife refuge or park to learn more about birds. In the summer, I fell in love with Indigo Buntings, Yellow-Breasted Chats, and Tanagers (Scarlet and Summer). This fall, I fell in love with the Warblers – even the ‘Confusing Fall Warblers’. Right now, I’m trying to learn all the ducks and waterfowl that migrate to the Chesapeake Bay region. I recently passed 150 birds on my life list. The adventure continues. Thanks to those who have joined me here, and I look forward to ‘meeting’ many more like-minded adventurers.

Hmm… it’s now June, 2014. I’m still crazily passionate about birding. My life list is at 209, my list for 2014 is at 182. Recently, I bought a 150-500mm zoom lens, and I’m learning to use that lens to get better close-up shots of the birds. Plus, I’m slowly learning to I.D. the birds by ear. While I keep my ‘lists’, I don’t want that to drive my birding. I want to learn about the birds in the context of their habitat. So I’m also learning a lot about the trees and other plants, about the animals and insets, and about the various ecosystems in the Mid-Atlantic area. And of course, I’m learning so much about myself in the process. The adventure continues!

Ok, so now I’m a bird junkie. It’s September, 2014. In the last year, I’ve traveled on a moment’s notice to see any number of birds. Some of these forays were successful – the Snowy Owl at Havre de Β Grace, the Yellow-Crowned Night Heron at Sligo Creek, the juvenile White Ibis at Wooten’s Landing. On others I missed the targeted bird – a Sandhill Crane in southern Pennsylvania, the Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher at Fort Smallwood – but still had a grand adventure. There is no more enjoyable way to spend the day than to get up before dawn and spend the entire day traipsing along in the great outdoors looking for birds.

  1. Joined you on the journey! I am a ‘real’ beginner birder too. Enjoy seeing birds I’ve never seen before and learning about them! Thanks for the follow as well. πŸ™‚

    • Thanks for coming along! If you are like me, you are going to get soooo hooked on birding. I’m out for at least an hour every day that the weather allows! I’m looking forward to comparing notes along the way!

      • hehe, okay let’s πŸ™‚ I went out a lot too over the summer searching for birds! Now life is a bit busier, but hope to be taking walks with the camera whenever I can πŸ™‚

  2. Thank you so much for stopping by my blog and liking me! πŸ™‚ Really appreciate it!

  3. Have we met yet? I’m assuming you’re with the Anne Arundel Bird Club right?

  4. You should join us ! Search my blog for Conowingo Dam and you’ll find my visitor guide for it.

  5. Thanks for deciding to follow my blog – I hope you enjoy it.

    • My pleasure. I so enjoyed your post this morning about the waves of waders coming ashore. I would have so enjoyed sitting and watching those thousands of birds flying overhead!! Looking forward to reading more of your posts!

  6. The horned larks are in Kent County DE. You asked me not too long ago about when I see them around here and I’m seeing them now. Yesterday I saw a few on Pickering Beach Rd near the air base and today I saw some in Harrington at the intersection of Winkler Rd and Carpenter Bridge Rd. I see them more in the farm fields than I do in the wildlife areas.

  7. Thanks, Judy, (I assume that’s your name.) for visiting my blog. Your story is so much like mine. I want to see every bird I can, and also photograph it. I will enjoy reading more.

  8. Welcome to the birding world, Judy! I hope you’re ready for the 4am wake-up calls, travelling long distances to remote locales, and trying futilely to explain the drive to “non-birders.”

Thanks for following my blog – I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I have. I look forward to hearing more about your adventures too!

    Cheers,
    Pat

    • Thank you, sir!! It’s inspiring to see someone who started, like me, with a common little bird and dove headfirst into this adventure. I look forward to reading about your adventures in South Korea and, I’m sure, other Asian countries. Best wishes!

  9. Hi Judy – Keep up the good work! I have granted you the Versatile Blogger Award. I hope you enjoy it. I can totally understand if you do not wish to participate. I think your blog is wonderful and wanted you to know that.

    Versatile Blogger Award

    • Babsje, I want to thank you so much for thinking of me. It really tickles me that you thought enough of ‘Flights of Wonder’ to nominate me for this award. I have decided not to participate in the awards element of blogging, but know that you have made my day!! πŸ™‚

      • Hi Judy – You’re welcome, and glad to have made your day. πŸ™‚ I totally understand and respect your choice to not do awards, no problem. Your blog is a small treasure and I wanted to share it with others. Best, Babsje

      • Bless your heart! Know that I think your blog well deserves the award. I have learned so much from you and from the other wonderful blogger/bird/photographers that I have ‘met’ through this experience. Take care, Judy

      • Thanks! πŸ™‚

I had pretty much the same experience last year and got hopelessly addicted to birding. Congratulations on 150 birds! I haven’t hit that yet but I’m hoping that I will this year!

Best of luck with the birding!

  11. I frequently see your blog in the related posts section when I am posting on my blog, Birdingnh.com. Wow, you are doing great work! We see a lot of the same birds it seems and your photos are excellent. It’s not easy doing a bird blog, right? Fun, though. I will keep stopping by.

    • Thank you so much for visiting, and for taking the time to comment! I checked out your blog, and yes indeed we are seeing many of the same birds. I will be curious to see what differences we see when we get to the spring migration. I really enjoyed your Blue Jay shots because of the color, and your Common Merganser shots because I’m still waiting to see my first!! Please do keep stopping by, and I’ll be checking out your blog, too! This is an addictive pasttime, isn’t it? πŸ˜‰

  12. It’s an OBSESSION, really. I simply must collect every, single one. Need to update my Life List too. You’re in good company it seems; it’s way better than following sports or TV series. Happy Birding!

PS — I’ve learned far more than I ever could have hoped from my feathered friends. They have made me a better person for sure.

I’ve just started too with recording it all but will catch up with the birds later. Lovely blog and insights from across the big pond.

    • Hello, Georgina (If I have your name right – I hope so!). Thanks for your kind words. It’s amazing to me to be in contact with so many wonderful people from all over the world through this simple little blog. Take care.

  14. Hi. I got a link to your blog from Bob Zoellers blog. I have you bookmarked and will check in on a regular basis. Love reading about birds. I am a birder, too.

Thanks for taking the time to do this.

  15. I share your passion for birding (and now, for me, blogging)! … and I love your enthusiasm!

    • The blogging is just as addictive as the birding! πŸ˜‰ It’s hard NOT to be enthusiastic about our beautiful bird friends. The world needs all of the passionate bird and nature lovers we can find!!

  16. Very interesting blog. I am also a relatively new birder/blogger/photographer and enjoyed checking yours out.
